A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M7.0 struck near Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday morning crumbling roads and splintering buildings.
The agency is reporting a depth of 40.9 km (25.4 miles).
Multiple aftershocks have been logged, ranging from M2.7 to M5.7.
The epicentre was located just 13 km (8 miles) N of Anchorage, Alaska (population 298,695).
Some 52,000 people are estimated to have felt very strong shaking, 277,000 strong, 48,000 moderate, 70,000 light and 1,000 weak.
A tsunami warning was in effect for coastal areas of Cook Inlet and Southern Kenai Peninsula, Alaska although Tsunami waves were not observed and the warning was cancelled some 90 minutes later.
What was observed was widespread power outages and damage caused by the significant quake.
An orange alert has been issued by the USGS for economic losses:
Significant damage is likely and the disaster is potentially widespread. Estimated economic losses are less than 1% of GDP of the United States. Past events with this alert level have required a regional or national level response.

The Anchorage Police Department said in a statement that it was handling “multiple situations” and reported “major infrastructure damage” across the city.

At Ted Stevens International Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration implemented a ground stop for flights.
The airport reopened a few hours after the quake.
