Historic Winter Storm arrives in NW U.S. [in September?!] — Snow Totals of 5+ feet Possible

A winter storm warning is in effect until Monday morning for north-central Montana, the National Weather Service (NWS) said, adding that blizzard conditions are also possible.

Strong winds and heavy snow have already brought power outages and road closures to many regions as the historic winter storm threatens to drop as much as 5+ feet in the Northern Rockies.

Feet of snow have already been reported just south of Glacier National Park, according to the NWS — Browning was blanketed by 23 inches and East Glacier Park by 21.

Great Falls saw a preliminary 9.7 inches of snow Saturday, which when confirmed will see a new daily snowfall record set, beating-out the previous record of 3.6 inches from 1954 (solar minimum of cycle 18). The city is forecast to see a further foot-or-so of snow thru Sunday, which would topple the all-time September snowfall record set back in 1934 (solar minimum of cycle 16).

This weekend’s snow is on course to be historic.

And “if the forecast pans out,” explains CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera, “this would rival or surpass the 1934 winter storm [solar min of cycle 16] which was for many areas the top early-season snowfall event on record.”

“This has the potential to be a historically significant early-season snow event,” says the NWS.

All this snow is adding to the record accumulations that survived 2019’s summer melt season. Against all the global warming odds, this years Total Snow Mass for the NH is off to a colossal head start:

And eyeing further ahead, the second week of October could bring even more:

Furthermore, along with the historic snow falling over the weekend, all-time monthly cold records are under-threat too; in central and southern Canada, as well as in the U.S. states of Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Wyoming, N. & S. Dakota, Nebraska and even Kansas.

Temperature departures are set to be a staggering 20+C below normal in some spots:

The cold times are returning, in line with historically low solar activity:
